ABAG members are invited to read, The Alternative: Most of What You Believe About Poverty Is Wrong, by Mauricio Lim Miller, which was highly recommended by Paul Schmitz at ABAG's recent Community Engagement Matters Workshop.

MacArthur Fellow, Mauricio Lim Miller is president and founder of the Family Independence Initiative (FII), which has a mission to support and accelerate low-income families’ own efforts to improve their social and economic mobility. A first-generation immigrant, Mauricio’s personal history deeply informs his life’s work. He was inspired to develop FII after researching the histories of communities in the United States who managed to rise from intense poverty to middle-class standing. Since its founding in 2001 in Oakland, CA, FII now has partnerships in 9 communities across the country, with the possibility of a site in Montgomery County, MD.

We invite ABAG members to read the book and join us for a discussion of how the issues raised have relevance for our work in Maryland. The author will not be present for the discussion.

The book is available for purchase in local bookstores. Please click to read, When Families Lead Themselves Out of Poverty, a New York Times opinion piece which features the author and the book.

Sponsored by ABAG’s Basic Human Needs Affinity Group for ABAG Members only. Lunch will be served.
